  1. Multiple myeloma produces many complications that require close medical attention and management.

  3. ‚Ä¢ Hypercalcemia (elevated blood calcium level)  This occurs in almost one-third of all patients and should be
  4.   suspected if symptoms such as loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, excessive thirst, increased urine,
  5.   constipation, weakness, change in mental alertness or confusion develop. Treatment is urgent because kidney
  6.   failure is common. Therapy with intravenous fluids and prednisone is usually effective, but if it isn't there are 
  7.   a variety of other effective agents such as the diphosphonates.

  9. ‚Ä¢ Infections  Bacterial infections may occur and must be diagnosed and treated promptly with appropriate
  10.   antibiotics. All patients should receive pneumococcal vaccine and influenza immunizations. Prophylactic
  11.   penicillin or intravenous gamma globulin should be considered for those with serious recurrent bacterial
  12.   infections.

  14. ‚Ä¢ Pain  Bone pain must be controlled so that the patient can get out of bed. Confinement to bed increases
  15.   resorption of calcium and osteoporosis (thinning) of the bones, and may precipitate hypercalcemia. If the pain
  16.   is in the back, as a result of osteoporosis and vertebral collapse, so that the slightest movement causes spasms
  17.   of excruciating pain, chemotherapy may be more effective than radiation in relieving the pain.
